HRM Monument #1: Samuel Cunard

Born in Halifax, on November 21, 1787, Samuel Cunard soon became a shipping magnate, earning his fortune in the West Indies trade. He was a prodigious entrepreneur who foresaw steam as the way of the future in ocean faring and built the first ever steam powered paddlers.

He was the pioneer of ocean steam navigation, and his Cunard Line forever changed the course of commerce and communication between the Old and New Worlds. In 1859, Samuel Cunard was knighted by Queen Victoria.
